Which Came First?

I don't see what the big deal is. The answer is quite obvious: the chicken.

Assume there is a chicken and it lays an egg, a chicken egg, out of which hatches an alligator. The chicken is still a chicken. The egg is still a chicken egg, because it was laid by a chicken. The alligator is still an alligator.

Assume there is an alligator and it lays an egg, an alligator egg, out of which hatches a chicken. The alligator is still an alligator. The egg is still an alligator egg, because it was laid by an alligator. The chicken is still a chicken.

If the chicken suddenly poofed into existence, the chicken would obviously be first. However, if there was an egg which suddenly poofed into existence, the egg would not be a chicken egg, even if out of it hatched a chicken. The poofed egg would be a poof egg, not a chicken egg. Finally, if the chicken evolved from some other creature, a proto-chicken, the chicken would have hatched from a proto-chicken egg, not a chicken egg.

Therefore, no matter whether the chicken was created whole cloth, hatched from the egg of a creature from which it evolved, or hatched out of an egg which predated the first chicken and was created, the chicken was first.

Simple.
